In these few verses (Romans 1:1-7) Paul uses the words “called to” three times: in v1, v6 and v7. Think about these three verses:
1.“Called to be an apostle” is clearly something that relates to the Apostle Paul, and not to his readers! It is a special calling (cf I Corinthians 12:27-30), but the picture of the church as “body” in that chapter reminds us that we all have a function to fulfil in the church – so we are all “called to be…” Have you ever stopped to see your role within the church or in the world as a vocation? And how are you fulfilling your calling?
2.“Called to belong to Jesus Christ”. This is not unique to Paul, but is something he shares with all believers. Paul has described himself in v1 as “a servant of Christ Jesus” – and the Greek word translated ‘servant’ also means ‘slave’, one who belongs completely to his master. How do we show that we belong to Jesus?
3.“Called to be saints”. Again, this is something that is true for every Christian – and it is not about what we will become, but about what God wants us to be here and now! A saint is someone who is set apart for God, who lives a holy life. What should that sort of life look like?
